Within five different topical neighbourhoods, from the Schmutzige Ecke to Zum Eros, the lnhalatorium, Bad Databrunn, and the Solartal, urgent themes and how these play out on different scales are explored in collaboration with progressive makers and thinkers. First launched in 1989, the first edition of Ornamenta was focused on video art, schmuck, and metal works. For the upcoming edition of Ornamenta 2024, the curators use the regional context as the curriculum, slowly transforming the existing geographic sites and former identities into temporary regional societies. Showing new behaviours and rituals, imagining their built environments, prototyping daily products and rethinking its ornaments.

From the city of Pforzheim, the Transferium of the region, visitors are welcomed from July until September 2024 to tour through the various “Gemeinden” – the temporary neighbourhoods spread all over the area.
The German term Gemeinde defines the most basic administrative unit of the state as well as all members of a community. Most commonly used in a geographical sense to identify neighbourhoods or villages, it is also used to describe people that share a common interest, a group that pursues a temporary or permanent purpose together.
During Ornamenta 2024 these five topical Gemeinden will bring together contributions on an international, national, and local scale for a relevant and durable artistic development for the Nordschwarzwald region highlighting local phenomena in a global context. The borders between the German municipalities of Pforzheim, Enzkreis, Calw, and Freudenstadt are erased and replaced by five conceptual neighbourhoods: the Schmutzige Ecke, the Solartal, the lnhalatorium, Bad Databrunn, and Zum Eros, introduced as new communities where its participants Ornamentalise the Northern Black Forest region.
